上海八中开设的首个“上海市男子高中基地实验班”于9月1日正式开学。男生班的课程设置除了市教委规定的基础型课程外，学校还制定了4个领域针对男生班特点的课程，包括“差异理解”、“偶像生成”、“生存体验”、“数字达人”等。

Sixty-four boys have spent their first two weeks of high school at Shanghai's first all-boys class, whose creation at the beginning of the month has been a topic of widespread attention and debate.
上海首个男生班的64名学生已经度过了他们高中生活的前两周，本月初这个班开班时曾引起广泛关注和争论。
All-boys class(男生班)的开设是上海八中的一个experimental program(实验项目)，意在解决男生在中学阶段遭遇的boys crisis(男孩危机)，即在academic performance(学习成绩)方面boys are outperformed and overshadowed by girls(女生总是优于男生，即“阴盛阳衰”)的状况，同时帮助男生cultivate masculinity(培养阳刚之气)。
男生班的教学方法和课程都是根据男生的psychological and physiological characteristics(心理和生理特点)设置的，避免使用rote memorization(死记硬背)等方法，帮助男生develop his special talents to the utmost(充分发挥自己的特长)。
不过有家长担心，男生班会reduce their ability to communicate with the opposite sex(削弱男生跟异性交流的能力)。
